Indoor Track and Field Highlights Impressive Winter Sports Season

EUGENE, Ore. – Bushnell University’s winter athletic season recently concluded, marked by impressive achievements and records across various sports.  

Overall, the Beacons garnered significant conference recognition, with four Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) Players of the Week and five athletes honored with All-Conference accolades. Additionally, 16 winter athletes received Academic All-Conference honors for maintaining a GPA of 3.2 or higher, with 12 of them also earning NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors for achieving a GPA of 3.5 or higher. 

Indoor Track & Field saw a momentous ten school records broken. Freshman Jermaine Schexnayder made history as the first Beacon to compete at the NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championships, qualifying in the triple jump and finishing 12th at the event with a new school record of 47’ 6.5”.  

In women’s basketball, the team continued its postseason streak, securing a spot in the CCC Tournament for the fourth consecutive season – by finishing the regular season in fifth place. Senior Aspen Slifka made history by breaking the Bushnell career scoring record in her last game, finishing with 1,843 points. Junior Libby Mathis set new single-season records for offensive and total rebounds and became the career record holder for offensive rebounds with 242. Both Slifka and Mathis received First-Team All-Conference honors, marking Slifka’s fifth First-Team All-CCC honor. She became the first player ever from a Bushnell team sport to earn the award five times, made possible due to the extra season of eligibility awarded for players who competed during the COVID era. 

On the men’s basketball front, the Beacons qualified for the CCC Tournament for the ninth time in the last ten years, while finishing the regular season in sixth place. Senior Spencer Hoffman’s outstanding performance earned him the prestigious title of NAIA National Player of the Week on February 7. Senior Stevie Schlabach etched his name in Bushnell men’s basketball history by becoming the third player to score 2000 points in his career, an accomplishment not achieved in 33 years. Schlabach, along with Senior Kaden Sand, received First-Team All-Conference honors, while Hoffman was recognized with honorable mention.
