Shirley Lathrop was born and raised in the Eugene area and attended the University of Oregon for her teacher education. She earned an MAT in English Literature at Portland State University and an MS in Counseling at Oregon State University. In her early career, she worked with students from PreK-12th grade and became a counselor after teaching for 15 years.
Shirley began teaching at Bushnell University during the Summer term of 2023 and also serves as a Field Supervisor for Counseling Interns. Currently, she is the Program Lead for the School of Counseling and teaches a variety of courses within the program. She has a heart for encouraging new counselors as they support youth.
Having been in public education as both a teacher and a counselor, Shirley aims to help new counselors understand various systems of public schools and consider how to be a light in the challenging environment that youth navigate daily.
