What You’ll Study
How the Curriculum is Structured
As you earn your Reading Interventionist Certificate, you’ll study evidence-based literacy instruction, diagnostic reading assessment, intervention strategies, and culturally responsive teaching practices. Your coursework prepares you to identify reading difficulties, develop targeted instructional plans, and support literacy growth across a variety of educational settings. You’ll explore literacy development across grade levels while learning to assess reading needs, implement interventions, and use research-based instructional practices.
Field Experiences
Your supervised practicum gives you the opportunity to apply literacy assessment and evidence-based reading intervention strategies in authentic PK-12 classroom settings. Working alongside experienced educators, you’ll assess students’ reading needs, develop targeted intervention plans, implement research-based instructional practices, and monitor student progress to improve literacy outcomes.

Planning Your Certificate

Admission to Bushnell University’s graduate certificate programs includes:
- Completed graduate application
- Official transcripts showing a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
- Statement of purpose (2–3 double-spaced pages) outlining your career history, professional goals, and guiding principles
- Current resume
- One professional or academic letter of recommendation addressing your academic ability, work performance, and character
- Two completed disposition assessments
- Personal interview with the admissions committee
- Current, unrestricted Oregon teaching license (required for educator licensure and endorsement certificate programs)
- 90 required hours
- Field experiences are coordinated in partnership with the School of Education and the Field Placement Coordinator. Whenever possible, we will work with students and their building administrators to have their field experiences take place in the school they are working in
Candidates seeking a Reading Intervention endorsement must complete any testing requirements established by the Oregon Teacher Standards and Practices Commission (TSPC). Bushnell faculty will guide you through current endorsement and testing requirements throughout the program.

Bushnell’s Reading Interventionist Certificate is designed for licensed teachers and teacher candidates who want to earn a Reading Intervention endorsement and strengthen their expertise in literacy instruction. The program prepares you to assess reading difficulties, deliver evidence-based interventions, and support students with diverse literacy needs.
Most students complete the Reading Interventionist Certificate in approximately nine months. The hybrid program begins each July and includes 18 graduate credits. Students who do not currently hold a teaching license will complete one additional prerequisite course.
Yes. Bushnell’s hybrid format is designed for working educators. Many students continue teaching while completing coursework and supervised practicum experiences. If you’re currently working in an appropriate educational setting, you may be able to complete portions of your practicum through your current teaching assignment, subject to program approval.
Yes. The curriculum aligns with Oregon Teacher Standards and Practices Commission (TSPC) requirements and prepares eligible educators to apply for a Reading Intervention endorsement. Candidates must also meet any additional state testing and licensure requirements established by TSPC.
